Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area
Kinmundy, Illinois (Marion County)
Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area sits on 3,103 acres of rolling southern Illinois landscape near Kinmundy in Marion County. Established in 1959 and named after the pioneering Illinois naturalist, this recreation area centers around the 585-acre Stephen A. Forbes Lake — a draw for anglers chasing largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie year-round.
The lake defines the experience here. Two boat ramps provide easy access for fishing boats (10 horsepower limit keeps things peaceful), and the shoreline offers plenty of bank fishing spots where you can set up without competing for space. Beyond the water, nearly 15 miles of trails wind through oak-hickory forest and open grassland, attracting hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders across distinct trail systems.
Hunters know Forbes well — the surrounding upland habitat supports productive seasons for deer, turkey, and dove. Bird watchers will find the mix of woodland, prairie, and lakeside habitat surprisingly rewarding, especially during spring and fall migration when warblers and waterfowl pass through.
The campground offers both electric and primitive sites with lake access, making it a solid base for multi-day visits. Facilities are well-maintained, and the 4.5-star rating from visitors reflects a place that consistently delivers without pretense.
Spring and fall are the sweet spot — mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and peak fishing conditions. Summer brings swimmers and picnickers to the beach area, while winter offers a quiet beauty that rewards those willing to bundle up.
Forbes doesn’t try to be flashy. It’s a genuine piece of southern Illinois that rewards anyone willing to slow down.
