Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area
Tucked into the ridgeline above St. Louis Heights in Honolulu, Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area offers one of Oʻahu’s most accessible ridge hikes with rewarding views of both the city and the Koʻolau Mountains. The trailhead sits at the end of a residential neighborhood, making it remarkably easy to reach despite feeling worlds away from Waikīkī.
The main draw is the Waʻahila Ridge Trail, a roughly 3-mile out-and-back route that climbs steadily through Norfolk pine groves before opening onto exposed ridgeline with panoramic views of Mānoa Valley, Pālolo Valley, and Diamond Head. The trail is well-maintained in its early stretches but becomes narrower and more rugged as it progresses, with some sections requiring careful footing along steep drop-offs. It connects to the larger Koʻolau Summit Trail network for experienced hikers looking for a longer adventure.
The recreation area itself features shaded picnic pavilions, restrooms, and a peaceful atmosphere that draws far fewer crowds than nearby Mānoa Falls or Diamond Head. It’s an excellent spot for a morning hike followed by a leisurely picnic under the pines.
Visit early in the morning for the clearest views and coolest temperatures. Trade winds keep the ridge comfortable most of the year, but afternoon clouds often roll in and can obscure the panorama. The trail can be slippery after rain, so check conditions during the wetter winter months from November through March.
With a 4.7-star rating across 433 reviews, Waʻahila Ridge consistently earns praise for its stunning vistas and the serenity of its forested lower trail.
