Sacred Falls State Park is located in the Kaluanui Valley near Hauula on the windward coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Known in Hawaiian as Kaliuwaa, the park was once one of Oahu’s most popular hiking destinations, drawing visitors to its dramatic 80-foot waterfall set deep within a narrow tropical canyon.

The park has been permanently closed to the public since 1999, when a devastating rockslide killed eight hikers and injured many others. The tragic event highlighted the geological hazards present in Hawaii’s steep, erosion-prone valleys. The narrow canyon walls that made the falls so spectacular also created dangerous conditions, as loose rock could be dislodged by heavy rains common on Oahu’s windward side.
