Hillsborough River State Park sits along one of Florida’s most scenic blackwater rivers in Thonotosassa, just 30 minutes northeast of Tampa. Established in 1935 as one of Florida’s original eight state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this 3,383-acre preserve protects a rare stretch of Class II rapids — the only whitewater you’ll find anywhere near the Gulf Coast.

The river is the main draw. Paddlers can rent canoes and kayaks to navigate the gentle rapids and limestone outcroppings, while the surrounding floodplain forest feels a world away from the nearby sprawl of Hillsborough County. Seven miles of trails wind through hardwood hammocks and along the riverbanks, where you’ll spot wading birds, river otters, and the occasional alligator basking on the bank.

The park’s swimming pool offers a gator-free alternative for cooling off, and the restored CCC-era structures add a layer of Depression-era history worth exploring. Fishing along the river produces bass, bream, and catfish for those with a Florida freshwater license.

For overnight stays, the campground offers both tent and RV sites with electric hookups, shaded by sprawling live oaks. Sites fill quickly during winter weekends, so reservations are worth making early.

Best time to visit: November through April, when humidity drops and mosquitoes ease up. Winter weekends draw the biggest crowds, but midweek visits are reliably uncrowded. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and serious heat — come early if you’re hiking.
