Wooster Mountain State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Danbury in Fairfield County, Wooster Mountain State Park offers 444 acres of rugged terrain that feels surprisingly remote for southwestern Connecticut. The park’s defining feature is Wooster Mountain itself, a traprock ridge that rewards hikers with sweeping views of the Housatonic River valley and the surrounding countryside.

The trail network here is modest but satisfying. The main trail climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest—oak, hickory, and birch—before reaching the rocky summit. It’s a solid workout without being overwhelming, making it a great option for intermediate hikers and families with older kids. The exposed traprock ridgeline supports unique plant communities, including prickly pear cactus and other species more commonly associated with warmer climates, giving the summit a character all its own.

Beyond hiking, the park draws visitors for hunting in season and quiet nature observation. Birders appreciate the ridge habitat, which attracts migrating raptors in autumn. Mountain laurel blooms along the trails in June, adding a spectacular display to early summer hikes.
