Perched high above the Housatonic River in New Milford, Lovers Leap State Park offers some of the most dramatic overlooks in western Connecticut. The park’s 127 acres sit along a steep bluff where the river bends sharply below, creating a landscape that feels far more rugged than you’d expect from a Litchfield County park. The name comes from a local legend involving a Paugussett chief’s daughter — you’ll find the story retold on interpretive signage near the overlook.

The main draw is the view. A short walk from the parking area leads to a clifftop vantage point where the Housatonic stretches out in both directions, framed by wooded hills. It’s a rewarding payoff for minimal effort, making this an excellent stop for families or anyone short on time. Beyond the overlook, trails wind through mixed hardwood forest and down toward the riverbank, where fishing for trout and smallmouth bass is popular in season.

Picnic areas with tables and grills make this a solid spot for a weekend lunch outdoors. The park connects to the Housatonic River Walk, a paved path that crosses into downtown New Milford — great for a casual stroll or bike ride.

There are no camping facilities at Lovers Leap, but nearby Lake Waramaug and Macedonia Brook state parks offer sites if you’re planning an overnight trip in the area.

Visit in mid-October for peak fall foliage — the river valley view transforms into a corridor of orange and gold that ranks among Connecticut’s best autumn scenes.
