Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail
Suffield, Connecticut (Hartford County)
Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail follows the historic towpath of a 19th-century canal built to bypass the Enfield Rapids on the Connecticut River. Stretching 4.5 miles along the river’s edge in Suffield, this linear trail offers one of the most scenic and accessible walks in Hartford County, earning a strong 4.6 out of 5 rating from over 500 visitors.
The flat, crushed-stone path runs between the old canal and the Connecticut River, creating a unique corridor where water flanks both sides. Walkers, joggers, and cyclists share the out-and-back route, which feels surprisingly remote despite its proximity to Bradley International Airport. Keep an eye out for great blue herons, bald eagles, and osprey hunting along the river, especially near the northern stretches where the rapids churn below.
The canal itself is a draw — remnants of the original lock system and stone walls tell the story of Connecticut’s industrial past, when boats carried goods around the treacherous falls. Interpretive elements along the path help piece together that history.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions. April and May bring migrating birds and wildflowers along the riverbank, while October transforms the canopy into a tunnel of color reflected in the still canal water. Summer visits work well for early morning walks before humidity builds.
The trail is day-use only with no camping facilities. Parking is available at the Canal Road entrance off Route 159. Bring water — there are no services along the path.
