Paugnut State Forest
Torrington, Connecticut (Litchfield County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Torrington in Litchfield County, Paugnut State Forest covers 1,644 acres of rugged New England woodland that feels far removed from Connecticut’s busy coast. The forest takes its name from the Tunxis word for the area, and its landscape reflects centuries of natural recovery — mature hardwoods now shade trails that once cut through farmland and charcoal operations.
Hikers will find a network of unmarked woods roads and footpaths winding through oak, birch, and hemlock groves, with seasonal streams cutting through rocky ravines. The terrain is moderately hilly, making it a solid choice for trail runners and mountain bikers looking for an uncrowded workout. In fall, the Litchfield Hills deliver some of Connecticut’s most vivid foliage, and Paugnut’s mix of hardwoods puts on a reliable show from late September through mid-October.
Hunting is permitted in season, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting during fall — blaze orange is a smart addition to your pack. Birdwatchers will appreciate the mix of interior forest habitat that supports species like pileated woodpeckers, ovenbirds, and wood thrushes during breeding season.
Winter brings quiet cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities when conditions allow. Spring can be muddy but rewards early visitors with wildflower displays along the forest floor before the canopy fills in.
Paugnut doesn’t offer developed facilities or marked trail maps, so come prepared with navigation basics and plenty of water. What it lacks in polish, it makes up for in solitude.
