Sue-meg State Park
California (Humboldt County)
Perched on the rugged Humboldt County coastline, Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick’s Point) spans 652 acres of dramatic sea stacks, dense coastal forests, and culturally significant Yurok heritage sites. The park occupies a headland jutting into the Pacific, offering some of Northern California’s most striking ocean panoramas without the crowds of parks further south.
The park’s network of trails winds through old-growth Sitka spruce and red alder groves before opening onto rocky bluffs overlooking the ocean. Wedding Rock, accessible via a short trail, delivers sweeping views of the coastline and is a popular spot for watching gray whale migration from December through April. Agate Beach, reached by a steep staircase, rewards beachcombers with semi-precious stones polished by the surf.
Sumeg Village, a reconstructed Yurok village within the park, stands as one of the most authentic cultural sites in the state park system. Visitors can walk among traditional family houses, a sweat lodge, and a redwood canoe, gaining meaningful insight into Yurok life and ongoing cultural traditions.
The park’s campgrounds sit among sheltering trees, offering wind-protected sites even when coastal gusts pick up. Reservations are recommended during summer months.
The best time to visit is June through September for milder weather, though the moody fog and winter storms appeal to those seeking solitude. Temperatures stay cool year-round — layers and rain gear are essential regardless of season. This is raw, beautiful North Coast California at its most authentic.
