Great Valley Grasslands State Park preserves one of the last remaining examples of California’s native Central Valley grassland — a landscape that once stretched for hundreds of miles but has largely given way to agriculture. Spread across 2,826 acres near Stevinson in Merced County, the park protects a rare ecosystem of bunch grasses, wildflowers, and riparian habitat along the San Joaquin River and its tributaries.

What makes this park special is its commitment to a vanishing landscape. Unlike the Sierra foothills or coastal parks that draw California’s crowds, Great Valley Grasslands offers something quieter and more elemental: open prairie, seasonal wetlands, and some of the best remaining habitat for grassland birds in the state. Birders come here for species like the burrowing owl, Swainson’s hawk, and white-tailed kite, while the spring wildflower bloom paints the hillsides in lupine, owl’s clover, and goldfields.

Hiking is straightforward — the terrain is flat and open, with informal trails winding through the grasslands and along waterways. Fishing is popular along the San Joaquin River channels, particularly for catfish and bass. Horseback riding is also permitted on designated trails.

The best time to visit is March through May, when wildflowers peak and temperatures are mild. Summer brings punishing Central Valley heat that regularly exceeds 100°F, making early morning the only comfortable window.
