San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area stretches across more than 26,000 acres of golden California hillside near Los Banos in Merced County, anchored by one of the largest off-stream reservoirs in the country. The Basalt and Medeiros campgrounds offer sites with lake views, though shade is minimal — bring your own sun protection. Several day-use areas provide picnic facilities and boat launch ramps.
