Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains of Garland County, Arkansas, Lake Ouachita State Park offers access to one of the cleanest lakes in the United States. The 40,000-acre lake—fed by natural springs rather than rivers—boasts exceptional water clarity that makes it a premier destination for swimming, scuba diving, and fishing.
What Makes It Special
Lake Ouachita holds the distinction of being Arkansas’s largest lake contained entirely within state borders. The crystal-clear waters and over 690 miles of shoreline create countless secluded coves perfect for exploration by kayak, canoe, or pontoon boat. Anglers prize the lake for its largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass populations.
Activities
The park’s 360 acres provide ample opportunities for hiking wooded trails, wildlife watching, and water sports. Rent a boat from the marina, cast a line from the fishing pier, or simply relax on the beach. The underwater visibility also attracts certified divers looking to explore submerged structures.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through early fall offers ideal conditions for water activities, with summer weekends being the busiest. Fall brings stunning foliage reflecting off the lake’s surface, while spring wildflowers carpet the surrounding mountains.
