Shepherd Ah Nei SRMA (pronounced “shepherd ah knee”) offers distinct recreation zones across roughly 5,000 acres of BLM land in Montana. The area splits into two main sections: a dedicated OHV area with approximately 50 miles of trails on 1,062 acres, and a larger 4,000-acre section open to hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and picnicking.

The terrain features rolling hills and open grasslands typical of central Montana. Established hiking trails wind through the non-motorized section, while the OHV area provides varied terrain for off-road enthusiasts. Birdwatching is productive throughout the property.

Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM lands here, though no developed campgrounds exist. Visitors should pack in all supplies and pack out all waste. Water sources are limited, so bring adequate supplies.

Access roads are typically passable for standard vehicles, though conditions vary seasonally. Before visiting, check the BLM closure hotline at (406) 896-5014 for current trail conditions and any restrictions.

Spring through fall offers the best conditions, with summer ideal for hiking and fall bringing fewer crowds and cooler temperatures for OHV riding.
