Apache Box Wilderness Study Area
New Mexico
Apache Box Wilderness Study Area encompasses rugged canyon country in southwestern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The defining feature is Apache Box itself—a dramatic narrow canyon where Apache Creek has carved through rock, creating sheer 600-foot cliffs that give way to rolling uplands above.
Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the WSA, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites in the juniper-piñon woodlands or grassland areas above the canyon rim. No developed facilities exist, so pack all water and supplies. Access requires high-clearance vehicles on unpaved roads, and visitors should verify current road conditions with the local BLM office before arrival.
Hiking routes follow the canyon floor through riparian vegetation or traverse the mesa tops where ponderosa pines dot north-facing slopes. Wildlife viewing opportunities include mule deer and various bird species drawn to the creek corridor. The remote location and lack of development make this an exceptional stargazing destination with minimal light pollution.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploration. Summer brings intense heat to the canyon bottom, while winter access may be limited by weather.
