Blue Creek Wilderness Study Area rises from the high desert of southwestern New Mexico, where the volcanic Black Mountain dominates the landscape. The Bureau of Land Management oversees this rugged terrain, offering a primitive backcountry experience for those seeking solitude.

The namesake Blue Creek cuts through the eastern section, carving a narrow canyon lined with cottonwoods, Arizona sycamores, and willows—a striking contrast to the surrounding desert grasslands and shrublands. Hiking routes follow the creek drainage and climb into the uplands, though trails are minimally maintained and require route-finding skills.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the WSA, with no developed campgrounds or facilities. Visitors must pack in all water and supplies and practice Leave No Trace principles. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for access roads.

The remote location and lack of light pollution make this an exceptional stargazing destination. Wildlife viewers may spot mule deer, javelina, and various raptors.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploration. Summer brings intense heat, while winter nights drop well below freezing at higher elevations.
