Sand Mountain Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area
Utah
Sand Mountain Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area offers dedicated OHV recreation on BLM-managed land near St. George, Utah. Designated as an open riding area in 1999, this destination features miles of technical trails alongside open terrain suitable for ATVs, dirt bikes, UTVs, and other off-highway vehicles of varying skill levels.
The area sits adjacent to Sand Hollow State Park, providing easy access from the greater St. George region. Riders can climb Sand Mountain itself for sweeping 360-degree views encompassing downtown St. George, Hurricane Cliffs, the Arizona Strip, Pine Valley Mountains, and Red Cliffs National Conservation Area.
Dispersed camping is permitted on surrounding BLM land, allowing visitors to set up camp near the riding area without fees or reservations. No developed campgrounds or facilities exist within the OHV area itself, so bring all water, supplies, and fuel. The sandy terrain can be challenging, particularly on steeper sections.
Fall through spring offers the most comfortable riding conditions, as summer temperatures in this high desert environment regularly exceed 100°F. Check current BLM regulations before visiting, as boundaries and rules may change.
