Bull Mountain
Utah
Bull Mountain rises dramatically from Utah‘s high desert, a dome-shaped peak in the Henry Mountains reaching 9,187 feet—nearly 3,000 feet above the surrounding plains. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a Wilderness Study Area, this remote landscape spans roughly 8 miles north to south and offers exceptional primitive recreation opportunities across nearly 80 percent of its terrain.
Dispersed camping is permitted throughout BLM lands here, with no developed campgrounds within the WSA boundaries. Visitors should arrive self-sufficient with water, supplies, and navigation tools. The terrain ranges from sagebrush flats to pine-covered slopes, requiring high-clearance vehicles for most access roads.
Wildlife viewing ranks among the primary draws—the area serves as range for the famous Henry Mountain Bison Herd, one of few free-roaming herds in the country. Cougar and peregrine falcon also inhabit these slopes. Hiking, photography, and hunting attract visitors to this uncrowded corner of southern Utah.
Best visiting seasons are late spring through early fall, though summer afternoons bring afternoon thunderstorms at higher elevations. Winter access is limited by snow.
