Halfmoon Reef Light

Halfmoon Reef Light

Texas

Halfmoon Reef Light stands as a striking piece of Texas maritime history in Port Lavaca. Built in 1858, this screw-pile lighthouse originally guided vessels through treacherous Matagorda Bay before being relocated ashore to the Calhoun County Museum grounds. One of the few surviving screw-pile lighthouses in the United States, it’s a rare architectural gem of pre-Civil War coastal engineering. The lighthouse is not open for climbing, but its compact iron frame photographs beautifully from ground level — golden hour light against Lavaca Bay makes for stunning shots. Nearby, visitors can explore the Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area, fish the bay’s legendary redfish flats, or stroll the waterfront at Bayfront Peninsula Park. A quiet, history-rich coastal stop.
