Standing at the remote tip of the Mississippi River Delta, Pass A L’Outre Light was built in 1855 to guide vessels through one of the river’s key navigational passes. The lighthouse endured decades of storms, subsidence, and erosion — challenges that ultimately led to its deactivation. Today the skeletal tower leans dramatically amid vanishing marshland, making it a striking symbol of Louisiana’s coastal land loss crisis.

The lighthouse is not open to the public and can only be reached by boat or air.
