Garden Key Light

Standing within the walls of Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, Garden Key Light was built in 1826 as one of Florida’s earliest lighthouses. The brick tower guided mariners through the treacherous shoals surrounding the remote island chain. Deactivated and closed to the public, the lighthouse remains a striking landmark against the tropical backdrop. Visitors cannot climb the tower but can view it up close while exploring Fort Jefferson’s impressive hexagonal fortification. Early morning and golden hour offer the best photography, when warm light contrasts against the fort’s weathered masonry. Nearby attractions include world-class snorkeling at the moat wall, pristine beaches, and exceptional birding, particularly during spring migration season.
