Lonesome Ridge Wilderness Study Area rises along New Mexico‘s Guadalupe Escarpment, roughly 40 miles southwest of Carlsbad. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this rugged landscape transitions dramatically from Chihuahuan Desert scrubland at lower elevations to sheer limestone cliffs and rocky outcrops higher up. The terrain is steep and challenging, rewarding hikers with striking views of the escarpment’s layered geology.

Hiking serves as the primary activity here, with trails traversing varied desert and mountain terrain. The WSA connects with adjacent protected lands, including Guadalupe Escarpment WSA and Guadalupe Mountains Wilderness, creating opportunities for extended backcountry exploration.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout BLM-managed portions of the WSA, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites away from developed areas. No facilities exist within the study area—pack all water, supplies, and waste. High-clearance vehicles may be necessary for access roads, particularly after rain.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for camping and hiking, with mild temperatures and lower fire risk. Summer brings intense heat at lower elevations, while winter nights can drop below freezing. Check current conditions with the BLM Carlsbad Field Office before visiting.
