Canyons Wilderness Study Area offers rugged, undeveloped terrain in New Mexico‘s high desert landscape, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The area features sagebrush flats transitioning into pinyon-covered sandstone hills, creating varied hiking opportunities across open country and rocky terrain.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the WSA, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites away from designated areas. No developed facilities exist here—pack in all water, supplies, and gear, and plan to pack out everything you bring. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for accessing more remote areas, and visitors should verify current road conditions with the local BLM office before arrival.

This WSA is under consideration for addition to the adjacent Cebolla Wilderness, making it part of a larger protected landscape worth exploring. Hiking routes follow natural corridors through the sandstone formations, though trails are largely unmaintained and require basic navigation skills.

Spring and fall provide the most comfortable conditions for camping and hiking, with mild temperatures and lower fire risk. Summer brings intense heat, while winter can see snow at higher elevations. Always carry adequate water regardless of season.
