Frying Pan Shoals Light

Frying Pan Shoals Light

Atlantic Ocean · North Carolina

Rising from the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Fear, North Carolina, Frying Pan Shoals Light is a Texas Tower-style platform built in 1964 to warn mariners of the treacherous Frying Pan Shoals. Unlike traditional lighthouses, this steel structure stands on massive legs driven into the ocean floor, resembling an offshore oil platform. Decommissioned and no longer an active aid to navigation, the tower was purchased privately and converted into a unique bed-and-breakfast adventure. The light is not open to general public access, and visitors cannot climb it without arrangement through the owners. Best photographed from charter boats during golden hour. Nearby, explore Bald Head Island, Oak Island Lighthouse, and the historic Cape Fear River waterfront.
