Masonboro Island State Natural Area
North Carolina (Coast County)
Masonboro Island State Natural Area is North Carolina’s largest undeveloped barrier island, a pristine 5,046-acre stretch of sand, marsh, and tidal flats between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. Designated a state natural area in 1976, the island has no roads, no bridges, and no permanent structures — just eight miles of wild Atlantic coastline accessible only by boat.
That remoteness is exactly the point. Masonboro is the rare coastal experience where you won’t share the beach with umbrellas and coolers (at least not many). The island’s sound-side salt marshes are a nursery for shrimp, blue crabs, and dozens of fish species, making it a prime spot for kayak fishing and cast-netting. The ocean side offers excellent shelling, particularly after storms push conchs, whelks, and sand dollars ashore.
Kayaking is the most popular way to explore. Paddle through the tidal creeks on the sound side to spot herons, ospreys, and the occasional loggerhead sea turtle nesting from May through August. Swimming is good on calmer days, though there are no lifeguards — ever.
Primitive camping is permitted, but you’ll need to pack in everything, including water, and pack out all trash. There are no facilities of any kind.
Visit between April and October for the best weather. Late spring and early fall avoid the peak summer heat and biting insects, which can be fierce on windless days. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water — Masonboro rewards those who come prepared for a genuinely wild barrier island.
