Jornada del Muerto Wilderness Study Area sprawls across a dramatic volcanic landscape in west-central New Mexico, roughly 45 miles south-southeast of Socorro. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this remote terrain features ancient lava flows punctuated by lava tubes, sinkholes, and pressure ridges—many now softened by windblown sand supporting native grasses and soaptree yucca.

Hiking is the primary activity here, with trails winding through this stark, beautiful environment. The volcanic formations create an otherworldly atmosphere, and wildlife enthusiasts may spot dark-colored reptiles adapted to the basalt terrain, along with significant bat populations inhabiting the lava tubes.

Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM land, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites throughout the area. No developed facilities exist, so pack all water, supplies, and navigation tools. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for access roads.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, as summer temperatures can be extreme across the exposed lava fields. Winter visits are possible but require preparation for cold desert nights. This WSA rewards self-sufficient adventurers seeking solitude in a geologically unique setting.
