Cedar Mesa SRMA sprawls across southeastern Utah‘s high desert, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a destination for exploring Ancestral Puebloan archaeology. Hikers and backpackers traverse miles of sandstone canyons to reach cliff dwellings, granaries, and rock art panels tucked into alcoves and ledges—some in remarkably inaccessible locations that speak to the ingenuity of their builders.

The mesa’s eastern boundary drops dramatically toward Comb Wash, where additional canyon systems offer route options for day hikes and multi-day trips. Expect rugged terrain requiring navigation skills and self-sufficiency. A permit is required for overnight backpacking and day-use in certain popular canyons.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout much of the SRMA, with primitive vehicle-accessible sites along dirt roads. No developed campgrounds exist on the mesa itself. Bring all water, as sources are scarce and unreliable.

Spring and fall provide ideal conditions—summer brings intense heat to the canyon bottoms, while winter access can be limited by snow and mud on unpaved roads. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for exploring backcountry routes.
