Mule Canyon cuts through the red and white sandstone layers of Cedar Mesa in southeastern Utah, offering a striking landscape rich with Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings and archaeological sites. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this area provides excellent opportunities for hiking, canyoneering, and exploring ancient ruins tucked into alcoves along the canyon walls.

Dispersed camping is permitted on adjacent BLM lands, with primitive sites available along Cedar Mesa. No designated campgrounds exist within the canyon itself, so visitors should arrive prepared with all supplies including water. The terrain involves slickrock, sandy washes, and moderate scrambling to access side canyons and ruins.

Access is via Highway 95 between Blanding and Natural Bridges National Monument. A signed trailhead provides entry to the main canyon system. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for some backcountry roads in the area.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for exploration, with mild temperatures ideal for hiking. Summer brings intense heat, while winter can see snow at this elevation. Visitors should obtain a day-use permit from the BLM for canyon access.
