Picacho Peak Recreation Area
New Mexico
Picacho Peak Recreation Area rises northwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico, where a 4,959-foot volcanic summit offers commanding views of the Mesilla Valley and Organ Mountains. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this rugged landscape features over 15 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The 1.5-mile summit trail climbs through ancient rhyolite formations—volcanic rock that cooled at the surface some 35 million years ago—rewarding the effort with panoramic desert vistas.
Beyond the peak itself, large canyons and mesas provide quieter terrain to explore. As BLM land, dispersed camping is generally permitted in undeveloped areas, though visitors should verify current regulations and pack out all waste. No developed campgrounds or water sources exist on-site, so come prepared with sufficient supplies.
Access is straightforward from Las Cruces via local roads. The high desert climate makes fall through spring the ideal visiting window, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Summer brings intense heat, making early morning outings essential. This is uncrowded public land suited to self-reliant adventurers seeking solitude and southwestern scenery.
