Old Frankfort Pike

Winding 14.5 miles through the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region, Old Frankfort Pike is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful roads in America. This state-designated scenic byway connects Lexington and Frankfort along a narrow, tree-canopied corridor that feels untouched by time.

Stone fences built by hand centuries ago line both sides of the road, framing vast horse farms where thoroughbreds graze behind white plank fencing. Rolling pastures of impossibly green grass give way to historic estates, centuries-old trees, and occasional glimpses of horses training in the early morning mist. The pike passes through the tiny crossroads community of Midway and skirts some of Kentucky’s most prestigious breeding operations.

Spring and early fall offer the most rewarding drives, when the landscape is lush and foals dot the paddocks. October brings a canopy of gold and crimson overhead. Allow at least 45 minutes to drive the full route without stops, though you’ll want longer — the narrow lanes and sweeping views invite a slower pace.
