About This Park

This recreation area is part of Grenada Lake

Old Fort Harrod State Park stands on the site where James Harrod established Kentucky’s first permanent settlement in 1774, making this 15-acre park in Harrodsburg one of the most historically significant spots in the state. What it lacks in sprawling acreage, it more than makes up for in living history.

The centerpiece is a full-scale replica of Fort Harrod, where costumed interpreters demonstrate frontier crafts like blacksmithing, woodworking, basket weaving, and broom making during warmer months. Walking through the fort’s heavy wooden gates genuinely transports you — the cabins, blockhouses, and stockade walls give a tangible sense of what survival looked like on the 18th-century frontier.

Beyond the fort, the park houses the Mansion Museum, filled with Confederate and Civil War artifacts, Native American relics, and Lincoln family memorabilia. The Lincoln Marriage Temple shelters the cabin where Abraham Lincoln’s parents, Thomas and Nancy, were married in 1806. The park’s cemetery, one of the oldest west of the Alleghenies, is worth a quiet walk.

Spring through fall is the best window to visit, as fort demonstrations typically run April through October. The grounds are beautiful year-round, but the interpreters bring everything to life. Plan about two to three hours to see it all comfortably.

With a 4.6-star rating across over a thousand reviews, visitors consistently praise the knowledgeable staff and the park’s ability to make history feel immediate rather than distant. It’s a rewarding stop for history lovers passing through central Kentucky.
