Robbins Reef Light

Robbins Reef Light

New Jersey

Robbins Reef Light stands sentinel in Upper New York Bay off Bayonne, New Jersey, guiding mariners since 1839. This spark-plug style lighthouse replaced the original stone tower in 1883 and is best known for its legendary keeper, Kate Walker, who tended the light for over 30 years after her husband’s death. Still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is not open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower. It’s best photographed from the Bayonne waterfront or Liberty State Park during golden hour, when the Manhattan skyline provides a dramatic backdrop. Nearby attractions include the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Liberty Science Center — all within easy reach.
