A gift from France dedicated in 1886, the Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island as one of America’s most iconic landmarks. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework by Gustave Eiffel, Lady Liberty has welcomed millions of immigrants arriving by sea. The neoclassical copper sculpture represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. The statue is currently closed to public access. For the best photography, visit during golden hour when warm light illuminates the copper-green patina against the Manhattan skyline. Nearby attractions include Ellis Island Immigration Museum, Battery Park, and the 9/11 Memorial. Ferry services from Lower Manhattan and Liberty State Park offer excellent views from the water.
