South Fork Owyhee Wild and Scenic River
Idaho
The South Fork Owyhee Wild and Scenic River carves through a dramatic 550-foot-deep canyon of basalt and rhyolite in southwestern Idaho, creating one of the state’s most remote wilderness river experiences. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this corridor offers exceptional solitude and rugged desert scenery punctuated by towering rock pinnacles and hoodoos.
Dispersed camping is permitted along the river corridor, making this an ideal destination for self-sufficient adventurers. Access requires high-clearance vehicles and careful route planning, as roads leading to put-in points can become impassable when wet. Most visitors experience the canyon via multi-day float trips during spring runoff, typically April through early June when water levels support rafting and kayaking.
Anglers can pursue smallmouth bass and channel catfish, while wildlife watchers may spot bighorn sheep, raptors, and mule deer along the canyon walls. Hiking opportunities exist but are largely informal, following game trails and side canyons. Photographers will find the layered rock formations and desert light particularly rewarding during golden hour. Come prepared with all supplies—no developed facilities exist within the canyon.
