Built in 1889 and relocated to Jeffrey’s Hook beneath the George Washington Bridge in 1921, this 40-foot steel lighthouse guided Hudson River traffic until decommissioned in 1948. It gained fame through Hildegarde Swift’s beloved 1942 children’s book *The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge*, which saved it from demolition when public outcry led to its preservation.

Now a New York City landmark in Fort Washington Park, the lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, though the NYC Parks Department hosts occasional festivals nearby. Golden hour provides stunning photography with the George Washington Bridge towering above.
