Paint Rock Canyon Trail follows Paint Rock Creek for 5 miles through one of the most dramatic landscapes on the west slope of Wyoming‘s Bighorn Mountains. The BLM-managed trail cuts through steep canyon walls and massive rock formations, offering the only maintained hiking route in this rugged terrain.

The creek provides excellent fishing for rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout, making this a prime destination for anglers. The trail accommodates hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, with wildlife viewing and photography opportunities throughout the canyon.

Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM land surrounding the trail, allowing visitors to set up camp in undeveloped areas away from the trailhead. No developed campgrounds exist within the immediate area, so come prepared with all supplies including water filtration.

Access requires navigating rural roads west of the Bighorns—check current conditions with the local BLM field office before heading out. The best visiting window runs from late May through October, when snow has cleared and creek levels stabilize. Early mornings offer optimal fishing and wildlife activity along the canyon floor.
