Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area protects 48,438 acres of rugged Mojave Desert terrain in southern Nevada, just minutes from Las Vegas. The area’s crown jewel is the Sloan Canyon Petroglyph Site, featuring over 300 rock art panels with 1,700 individual designs created by native cultures spanning thousands of years—one of the most significant concentrations of petroglyphs in the Southwest.

The conservation area offers hiking through dramatic desert canyons and volcanic landscapes. The North McCullough Wilderness within the NCA provides backcountry solitude and cross-country exploration opportunities. Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM land outside designated wilderness areas, though no developed campgrounds exist within the NCA itself.

Access is via paved roads from Henderson, with trailheads providing entry points to the petroglyph viewing areas and wilderness. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for some backcountry routes. Visitors should bring all water and supplies, as no services exist within the conservation area.

Fall through spring offers ideal conditions, with mild temperatures for hiking and camping. Summer months bring extreme heat, making desert travel challenging and potentially dangerous.
