Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway

South Dakota

68.0 miles

Winding through the heart of South Dakota’s Black Hills, the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway delivers 68 miles of unforgettable mountain driving that showcases some of America’s most iconic landmarks. This National Scenic Byway connects Custer and Keystone via SD 87, SD 89, US 16A, and SD 244, creating a loop through pristine Ponderosa pine forests and dramatic granite formations.

The route features engineering marvels including the famous pigtail bridges—corkscrew overpasses that spiral through the landscape—and narrow tunnels strategically framed to reveal Mount Rushmore in the distance. You’ll traverse Needles Highway, where towering granite spires rise like cathedral spines, and Iron Mountain Road, considered one of the most spectacular drives in the nation.

Key stops include Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park with its roaming bison herds, and Sylvan Lake’s crystal waters nestled among ancient rock formations. Wildlife sightings of bighorn sheep, pronghorn, and wild burros are common throughout.

The best time to drive is late May through early October when all roads are open and fall colors paint the hillsides gold. Allow at least three to four hours for the drive alone, though a full day lets you properly explore the viewpoints, trails, and attractions along this remarkable route.
