Newfound Gap Road Byway

Tennessee, North Carolina

31.0 miles

Winding through the heart of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Newfound Gap Road delivers one of the most spectacular mountain drives in the eastern United States. This 31-mile All-American Road climbs from Cherokee, North Carolina to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, crossing the Appalachian Trail at its highest point along the way.

The journey begins in lush hardwood forests before ascending through fragrant spruce-fir groves that feel more like Canada than the South. At Newfound Gap (5,046 feet), step onto the Rockefeller Memorial where you can stand in two states simultaneously while drinking in panoramic views of endless blue-green ridges fading into the horizon.

Pull off at countless overlooks to photograph the park’s signature layered mountain vistas and mysterious morning mists. Stop at Chimney Tops for a challenging hike, or simply breathe in the crisp mountain air at one of the quiet picnic areas tucked along the route.

Spring brings wildflower displays and rushing waterfalls. Summer offers cool refuge from lowland heat. Autumn transforms the mountains into a blazing tapestry of gold, orange, and crimson.

Allow two to three hours for a leisurely drive with stops. Early morning or weekday visits avoid crowds and offer the best chance to spot black bears, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys along the roadside.
