A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway
Florida
72.0 miles
Stretching 72 miles along Florida’s northeastern Atlantic coast, the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway delivers one of America’s most captivating coastal driving experiences. This All-American Road designation—the highest honor for a scenic byway—is well deserved.
Beginning at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area and winding north to Ponte Vedra Beach, this route hugs the shoreline through a stunning mix of pristine beaches, historic communities, and natural wonders. You’ll pass through the charming streets of Flagler Beach, where surfers catch waves just steps from local cafes, then continue to St. Augustine—America’s oldest city—where Spanish colonial architecture and centuries of history await exploration.
Along the way, discover uncrowded beaches perfect for shelling, watch dolphins play in the Intracoastal Waterway, and pause at Fort Matanzas National Monument. The route passes through Marineland, home to one of the world’s first oceanariums, and offers countless ocean vistas where the Atlantic stretches endlessly toward the horizon.
Best time to visit: Spring and fall offer ideal weather with fewer crowds. Summer brings sea turtle nesting season.
Allow: A full day minimum—though the countless beaches, historic sites, and seaside restaurants make a weekend even better.
This is coastal Florida at its most authentic and beautiful.
