Big Park, commonly known as the Village of Oak Creek, sits at the southern gateway to Sedona’s famous red rock country in Arizona. The combination of high desert elevation, minimal light pollution, and clear atmospheric conditions creates ideal stargazing throughout much of the year.

The community takes its dark sky designation seriously, with outdoor lighting ordinances that preserve the natural darkness. Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, two of Sedona’s most iconic formations, frame the southern skyline and create dramatic silhouettes against star-filled skies. Amateur astronomers frequently set up telescopes along Bell Rock Pathway and other pullouts for deep-sky observation. Jupiter, Saturn, and meteor showers put on particularly vivid shows against the dark canvas.

The best stargazing months run from April through October, when clearer skies prevail and the galactic core of the Milky Way arcs overhead. Winter months bring earlier darkness and crisp, transparent air. Visitors should bring warm layers regardless of season, as desert temperatures drop significantly after sunset.
