Westcliffe Dark Sky Park
Colorado
Dark Sky ParkNestled in Colorado’s Wet Mountain Valley at 7,800 feet elevation, Westcliffe Dark Sky Park earned its International Dark-Sky Association designation in 2015, making it one of the state’s premier astronomical destinations. The park’s remote location, shielded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, delivers exceptional viewing conditions with minimal light pollution.
Stargazers enjoy stunning views of the Milky Way’s galactic core, Andromeda Galaxy, and numerous deep-sky objects including nebulae and star clusters. The high altitude and low humidity create remarkably transparent skies ideal for observing faint celestial phenomena.
Peak viewing occurs from late spring through early fall, with summer months offering the best Milky Way visibility. Arrive at least an hour after sunset to allow eyes to fully dark-adapt, with optimal conditions typically between 10 PM and 2 AM.
Bring binoculars for wide-field scanning or a telescope for detailed planetary and deep-sky observation. Red flashlights preserve night vision.
The Smokey Jack Observatory hosts public star parties and educational programs throughout the year. Local astronomy clubs regularly organize viewing events, welcoming visitors of all experience levels.
