Lighthouse

Mary Island Light

Alaska

About this place

Mary Island Light stands at the southern entrance to Revillagigedo Channel in Southeast Alaska, guiding mariners through these remote waters since 1903. Built during Alaska’s early territorial period, the lighthouse served as a critical navigational aid along the busy Inside Passage shipping route. The station was automated in the mid-20th century and remains an active aid to navigation today. Though not open to the public, the lighthouse can be viewed from passing ferries and charter boats traversing the Inside Passage. The best photography light comes during long summer evenings from June through August, when Alaska’s extended daylight offers golden-hour shots lasting hours. Nearby, visitors can explore Ketchikan’s totem pole collections, Misty Fjords National Monument, and world-class salmon fishing opportunities.
