Dall Bay State Marine Park
Ketchikan, Alaska (Southeast Alaska parks County)
Dall Bay State Marine Park sits along the sheltered waters south of Ketchikan, offering one of Southeast Alaska’s quieter coastal escapes. Accessible only by boat or floatplane, this marine park rewards the effort of getting there with pristine tidal flats, old-growth Sitka spruce forest, and waters teeming with marine life.
The park’s protected bay creates calm conditions ideal for kayaking and canoeing, even when the outer channels run rough. Paddlers can explore the shoreline at low tide, where sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs crowd the exposed rocks. Black bears frequently forage along the beach, and humpback whales pass through the surrounding waters from May through September. Bald eagles nest in the tall spruce above the waterline, making this a reliable spot for wildlife viewing without the crowds found closer to Ketchikan.
Fishing draws many visitors here — pink and chum salmon run strong in late summer, and Dolly Varden trout hold in the creek mouths year-round. The bay also supports healthy populations of halibut and rockfish in its deeper channels.
There is no developed campground, but dispersed camping is permitted along the shoreline. Boaters often anchor in the bay overnight, taking advantage of the natural wind protection. Come prepared with all supplies, as there are no facilities or services.
The best window to visit runs June through August, when daylight stretches past 10 PM and rainfall, while still frequent, eases enough for comfortable days on the water. Bring rain gear regardless — this is the Tongass.
