Cape Sarichef Light

Alaska

About this place

Cape Sarichef Light stands on the western tip of Unimak Island, Alaska, where the Bering Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. Built in 1904, it was one of the most remote lighthouses in the United States, enduring brutal storms and volcanic activity from nearby Shishaldin Volcano. The light was deactivated and the station eventually abandoned due to the extreme conditions. The lighthouse is not open to the public, and access to Unimak Island itself is limited — there are no roads connecting it to the mainland. Summer months offer the best photography light and calmer weather. Nearby attractions include the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Aleutian Islands.
