Scotch Cap Light
Perched on the southwestern tip of Unimak Island, Alaska, Scotch Cap Light was built in 1903 to guide vessels through treacherous Unimak Pass. The station gained tragic notoriety on April 1, 1946, when a massive tsunami — triggered by an Aleutian earthquake — destroyed the lighthouse and killed all five Coast Guardsmen on duty. A replacement structure was built on higher ground but has since been decommissioned and is no longer active. The site is not open to the public, and the remote location makes casual visits extremely difficult. Summer months offer the best photography light and calmer weather. Nearby, the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge provides stunning seabird colonies and volcanic landscapes worth exploring.
