Asylum Light
Wisconsin
Rising from the grounds of the former Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane, the Asylum Light is one of America’s most unusual lighthouse-style structures. Built not for maritime navigation but as an architectural centerpiece of the sprawling asylum complex, this distinctive tower stands as a haunting reminder of 19th-century institutional history. The light is no longer active and the site is not open to public climbing. Golden hour and overcast autumn days offer the most dramatic photography, when the aging tower contrasts against moody Wisconsin skies. Nearby, visitors can explore the Oshkosh Public Museum, the EAA Aviation Museum, and the scenic Fox River waterfront trail system.
