Stannard Rock Light

Rising from the treacherous waters of Lake Superior roughly 25 miles off Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, Stannard Rock Light has earned the nickname “the loneliest place in America.” Completed in 1882 after years of grueling construction on a submerged granite shoal, the lighthouse stands as a remarkable feat of engineering. The active light continues guiding vessels through one of the Great Lakes’ most dangerous stretches. The station is not open to the public, accessible only by boat or helicopter. Charter excursions from Marquette or Houghton offer the best photography opportunities, ideally during summer’s calm waters and long golden-hour light.
