Sand Point Light stands on the shores of Little Bay de Noc in Escanaba, Michigan, where it has guided mariners since 1867. The square red brick tower served as a vital navigational aid for iron ore shipping routes across upper Lake Michigan. After years of neglect, the lighthouse was carefully restored by the Delta County Historical Society and now houses the local history museum. Though the tower itself is not open for climbing, the grounds and museum are worth a visit. The light remains active to this day. For the best photographs, arrive during golden hour when warm light plays off the red brick against the lake. Nearby, Ludington Park offers waterfront trails, and the Upper Peninsula’s vast forests beckon just beyond town.
