Au Sable Light

Au Sable Light

Lake Superior · Michigan

Perched on the remote Lake Superior shoreline in Burt Township, Alger County, Michigan, Au Sable Light has guided mariners since 1874. Built to mark the treacherous stretch known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes,” the lighthouse stands within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — one of the most scenic settings of any lighthouse in the country.

The station is not open to the public for climbing, though the grounds can be visited via a 1.5-mile trail from the Hurricane River Campground. The hike itself is a highlight, passing through dense forest and along the Superior shoreline.

Golden hour and early morning fog create the best photography conditions. Nearby, explore Pictured Rocks cliffs, Chapel Rock, and Twelvemile Beach.
