Grand Marais Range Lights

Built in 1895 on the shores of Lake Superior, the Grand Marais Range Lights have guided mariners into the harbor for over a century. The station features two lights—a front and rear range light—that align to mark a safe channel into port. Still an active navigational aid maintained by the Coast Guard, the lights are not open to public climbing. The surrounding area offers excellent photography opportunities, particularly at sunrise and sunset when Lake Superior’s dramatic light plays off the historic structures. Fall provides peak color contrast. Nearby, visitors can explore Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Grand Sable Dunes, and the charming village of Grand Marais with its art galleries and local eateries.
